Kiwanis International, Inc. is an international service organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The organization, which began in 1915 as a business club in
Detroit, Michigan, now comprises over 8000 clubs in over 100 countries. We number 600,000 members, counting adults, college, high school and middle school levels.
Our club, Kiwanis Club of Sonoma Plaza, was chartered in 1985. We have about 65 members, roughly 60% men and 40% women, with a healthy mix of business people, professionals and active retired residents of Sonoma Valley, California. Our focus is service to the community, with emphasis on youth.
Our members work actively on many community service activities, incorporating hands-on projects, raising funds to support local school programs and participating with other non-profit organizations to improve local educational or cultural programs. In fostering our youth auxiliaries, we are providing our young people opportunities to develop leadership and managerial skills as well as inculcating the spirit of service to the community.
For most, if not all of us, our club is a nexus of continually expanding community development, as our membership includes current or former elected officials, executive directors and board members of key local non-profits. We take pride in making Sonoma Valley a wonderfully caring place with a positive approach to its present and future as well as a healthy respect for the historic significance of this community.
